A member of PC Games Hardware forums has apparently unlocked his PowerColor Radeon R9-290 OC to a fully fledged R9-290X, simply be replacing the BIOS. By replacing his stock BIOS with an Asus R9-290X BIOS he was able to unlock all 2816 Stream Processors and 176 Texture Units. The R9-290 has 2560 and 160 respectively. He’s provided ample proof in the form of screenshots and a video.
His screenshots seem to prove that his R9-290 is indeed performing better. Could this be another AMD Radeon 6950/6970? What do you think? So far this has only been done with a PowerColor R9 290 OC using an Asus R9-290X BIOS; if you experiment and find other cards/BIOS versions work, please let us know!
